Apology Bill

Heeding growing dissatisfaction in the native Hawaiian community and a call to redress past wrongs, President Bill Clinton signed the apology bill. The Senate Resolution apologized "to Native Hawaiians for the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawai`i on January 17, 1893, with participation of agents and citizens of the United States, and the deprivation of the rights of Native Hawaiians to self-determination." Although the resolution took no steps toward reparations or other material compensation, it was an acknowledgement of federal responsibilities and a positive sign for the growing Hawaiian sovereignty movement.
